In July 2008, the then undefeated Miguel Cotto who then held the WBA World Welterweight title fought Antonio Margarito for the first time.
Antonio had lost the early rounds of that match. However, he came back with relentless offensive pace and wore down Miguel. In the eleventh, a combination from the challenger finally forced the defending champ to his knee. Miguel got up, but Antonio continued landing combinations.
Evangelista Cotto threw in the towel after his boxer fell again to the canvas in the corner of the ring. The referee stopped the fight and awarded Antonio with an 11th round TKO win over Miguel and the WBA title.
Following their epic first match, Miguel Cotto bounced back by winning over Michael Jennings by TKO to capture the vacant WBO World Welterweight belt. Then, he successfully defended it against Joshua Clottey in a very close split decision victory. He then lost his belt when he was TKO’d by Manny Pacquiao in the 12th round of their bout.
Following his second professional loss, he made a successful transition to the next higher weight class as he won a light middleweight world title when he TKO’d Yuri Foreman in the 9th round. Then he successfully defended it with a 12th round TKO win over Ricardo Mayorga.
On the other hand, Antonio Margarito lost to Shane Mosley by 9th round TKO. Prior to this match, Antonio and his trainer Javier Capetillo was caught in a tampered handwraps controversy.
After further investigation following the controversy, Margarito and Capetillo’s licenses were revoked for at least one year. Since state boxing commissions generally honor suspensions imposed in other states, this action effectively banned Antonio from boxing in the United States.
Cotto’s first professional loss has since come under suspicion due to Antonio’s subsequent attempted use of illegal hand-wraps in the Mosley fight.
Over a year after the incident, he returned inside the boxing ring and won by unanimous decision over Roberto Garcia in Mexico. Then six months later, he was dominated by Manny Pacquiao in 12 rounds.
On December 3, 2011, these two fighters will face each other for the second time. Miguel will defend his WBA World Super Welterweight Super Champion title belt in a 153-pound catch weight match against Antonio.
The world light middleweight title bout is just over one week away but before that, Cotto and Margarito sat down in an exclusive interview with Max Kellerman to hype their upcoming match.
On this face-off interview, both boxers talked about their first match.
Then, a heated confrontation and exchange of words between the two light middleweights occurred when the tampered hand wraps controversy was brought up.
They also talked about Antonio’s warrior’s spirit when he fought Pacquiao and what Miguel thinks about risking his health inside the ring.
