In May 2004, Manny Pacquiao who then held The Ring Featherweight title fought unified IBF and WBA World Featherweight Super Champion Juan Manuel Marquez for the first time.

Juan Manuel was knocked down three times by Manny in the first round of that match. However, JMM showed great heart to recover from the early downfalls, and went on to win the majority of rounds thereafter. After twelve exciting rounds, the bout was scored a split draw, which proved to be a controversial decision that outraged both camps.

Almost four years after their first meeting, they squared off again in March 2008 at super featherweight.

Their rematch was a close hard fought battle, during which both boxers received cuts. Throughout the fight, Marquez landed the most punches at a higher percentage. However, the decisive factor proved to be a third-round knockdown, wherein Juan Manuel was floored by a Pacquiao left hook.

After another twelve rounds of boxing, Manny finally edged JMM with a very close split decision victory.

Following their epic rematch, the then four-division world champion Pacquiao made successful transition to the higher weight classes as he added four more world titles in a span of three years.

He BOOMed lightweight champion David Diaz by TKO. Then, he made Oscar De La Hoya retire on his stool in a welterweight match. After that, he put junior welterweight champ Ricky Hatton to sleep in two rounds to capture his record-tying six world titles.

Then, he defeated welterweight champ Miguel Cotto by TKO for his record-breaking seventh title and defended it against Joshua Clottey by unanimous decision. He moved up and dominated Antonio Margarito by UD to win his mythical 8th world title in as many weight divisions. Then, he moved down and defended his welterweight belt over Shane Mosley.

On the other hand, Juan Manuel Marquez captured The Ring, WBO and WBA World Lightweight Super Champion titles. Here are his matches; TKO over Joel Casamayor, TKO over Juan Diaz, UD loss to Floyd Mayweather, Jr., UD win over Juan Diaz in rematch, TKO over Michael Katsidis and TKO over Likar Ramos.

On November 12, 2011, these two fighters will face each other for the third time. Manny will defend his WBO World Welterweight title belt in a 144-pound catch weight match against Juan Manuel.

The trilogy was made official during the Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 World Press Tour 2011.
