On this HBO Boxing Classic, The Ring and IBO Light Welterweight Champion Ricky Hatton faced Manny Pacquiao to defend his title belts.
The boxing light welterweight title Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton fight video dubbed as “The Battle of East and West” took place last May 2, 2009 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA and aired on HBO PPV (Pay-Per-View).
Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, “Pac-Man”, back then had a professional record of 48 wins (36 by way of knock out, KO), 3 losses and 2 draws. After capturing a world title at lightweight in June 2008 and dismantling Oscar De La Hoya at welterweight six months after, he targets another title at another weight class.
While British boxer Ricky Hatton, “The Hitman”, back then had a professional record of 45 wins (32 by way of knock out, KO) and 1 loss. After suffering his first loss in December 2007 against Floyd Mayweather, Jr., he won his next two matches.
The Pacquiao vs Hatton video was a light welterweight division title match with Ricky’s The Ring and IBO belts at stake.
This bout was originally placed in jeopardy due to disputes with both camps over the purse money. Eventually, the money issue was settled and the fight went on as scheduled.
In the first round of this match, Manny started the fight strong by knocking down Ricky twice; a right hook knocked down the Briton for the first time then the other one after a combination by Manny with 9 seconds left. A somewhat shaken Hatton beat the count, only to be saved by the bell seconds later.
Hatton seemed to have recovered in the second round as he stalked Pacquiao for most of the round. However, with less than ten seconds remaining, Pacquiao unleashed a sharp left hook that knock Hatton out cold prompting the referee to end the bout.
Ricky laid on the canvass for several minutes before getting up; he was eventually taken to a local hospital for a precautionary brain scan.
Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2) defeated Ricky Hatton (45-2-0) via 2nd Round Knock Out (KO) to win The Ring and IBO Light Welterweight title belts.
Manny’s win makes him one of only two (the other being Oscar De La Hoya) to win six world championships in six different weight divisions at that time. The knockout won him the 2009 Ring Magazine Knockout of the Year.
The defeat was the second in Ricky’s career but also his second in four fights. Eventually, this is his last fight as a professional boxer as Hatton announced his retirement from boxing last July 7, 2011.
