Khan had been undefeated on his first 18 professional fights. In his 19th bout last September 2008, he suffered his first loss in the hands of Breidis Prescott.

Coming into the bout, Amir was a huge favorite to win over Breidis who on that time had a prolific knock out record of 17 KOs in 19 contests. The worst thing has yet to come.

In the opening round of their match, Prescott came out fast and landed some good shots; a stiff jab slightly buckled Khan’s knees then a left hook that clipped his temple turned his legs into jelly. Instead of holding, Amir tried to punch back, and ate a left hook, right hook combo from Breidis that sent him crashing to the canvas.

He managed to get to his feet, but was stumbling about badly. Breidis ended it for good with a another left that put Amir down again, this time, he was unable to get up. The fight was officially over in just 54 seconds awarding Prescott a 1st round KO victory.

He won his next two matches over Oisin Fagan and Marco Antonio Barrera then for his March 2009 bout, he moved up in weight to challenge WBA World Super Lightweight Champion Andriy Kotelnyk. He won via Unanimous Decision to capture his first world title.

His first title defense happened on December 2009 against the then undefeated Ukrainian-American boxer Dmitry Salita, the mandatory challenger. The defending champion finished the fight in just 76 seconds via TKO knocking down his challenger three times, the first one after 10 seconds.

He made his fight debut on American soil last May 2010 against Paulie Malignaggi. Throughout the Khan vs Malignaggi match, the champ out-boxed his opponent and, utilized his combination speed and power well as he cruised to an 11th Round TKO win.

Seven months later, he face the hard-hitting Argentinian Marcos Maidana. Amir dominated early on the Khan vs Maidana bout as he knocked down his challenger in the first round with multiple body shots. He successfully defended his belt for the third time by Unanimous Decision despite a worrying 10th-round wobble when Marcos hurt him.

In his first fight in 2011, he defeated the previously undefeated Irish southpaw Paul McCloskey when the match was stopped in the sixth round. This was the result of an unintentional head clash which left McCloskey with a deep cut above his eye. Amir was winning all six rounds on the judges scorecards of the Khan vs McCloskey at the time of the stoppage and was declared the winner by Technical Decision.

On July 23, 2011, he faced IBF World Junior Welterweight Champion Zab Judah in a title unification match. Amir won on Khan vs Judah via a 5th Round KO with a body shot after dominating all the previous rounds to unify the IBF and WBA belts.
