This year’s March Madness just proved that being one of the top two seeded teams in the bracket of the 2011 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament is not an assurance that they’ll make it to the national semifinals.
Why? Because all of the number 1 and 2 regional seeds failed to make it to the Final Four. This is the first time that it happened in NCAA tournament history.
Among the top four seeds, the first one exited early in the Southeast Third Round. Then, the other two failed to pass through Sweet Sixteen. Finally, the last one bowed down in Elite Eight.
The college basketball teams that comprise the NCAA Final Four 2011 are the East’s #4 seed University of Kentucky Wildcats, West’s #3 seed University of Connecticut Huskies, Southeast’s #8 seed Butler University Bulldogs and Southwest’s #11 seed Virginia Commonwealth University Rams.
The Kentucky Wildcats defeated Princeton, West Virginia, Ohio State and North Carolina to reach this point. This is their fourteenth Final Four appearance and they’ve won seven NCAA championships in the past.
Connecticut Huskies on the other hand were victorious over Bucknell, Cincinnati, San Diego State and Arizona. Appearing in the Final Four for the fourth time, they won the title twice in 1999 and 2004.
For the Butler Bulldogs, this is their second straight appearance in the Final Four. They were the tournament runner-up last year in a very close NCAA Championship game against Duke. This year, the team managed to pass through Old Dominion in the second round, Pittsburgh in the third then over Florida in the East finals.
And finally, the VCU Rams who are making their first appearance complete this year’s national semifinalists. They won over Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and top seeded Kansas.
