Boxing vs MMA, Which is Better?

For the past few years, a debate about two combat sports has been heating up. Which sport is better than the other?

It’s about Boxing vs MMA. Many experts say that Boxing is better than MMA while others think it’s vice-versa.

Boxing is a combat sport wherein two people fight using only their fists. Use of elbows and knees are not allowed. It has been one of the most popular sports for the past decades but in recent years, Boxing lost some major viewers who seek exciting fights. Instead, they prefer to watch the fast-rising sport, MMA.

MMA or Mixed Martial Arts is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting skills and techniques from different types of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. In this sport, both striking and grappling techniques can be used both while standing and on the ground.

In MMA, a fighter can strike using his fists, elbows, knees and legs. Some of the popular grappling skills used in this sport are throw down as in wrestling or judo and submissions as in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

The “art of punching” vs the “art of fighting”, Boxing vs MMA. Manny Pacquiao (BWAA Fighter of the Decade) and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (2010 ESPYs Fighter of the Year) are two of the most popular boxers in this era while for MMA, Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre top the list.

If you put an MMA fighter against a boxer in a boxing match, I believe that the boxer will win because of his better punching skills and footwork.

While if you put a boxer in a mixed martial arts match, the boxer will most likely lose because of the lack of knowledge about the “ground game” unless he can land a solid punch to his opponent’s chin before the MMA fighter take him down like the video you can watch below.

In my opinion, both combat sports are great in their own unique way. Boxing is superior in striking using fists as well as footwork and evasion while Mixed Martial Arts combines every aspect of fighting that is also exciting to watch as the former.

Boxing is a small part of MMA and the two sports shouldn’t be compared because it’s a different sport. A great boxer most likely will not win in an MMA match, the same as, a great MMA fighter will get outboxed in a boxing fight.
