After losing his WBC World Super Featherweight belt via Split Decision against Manny Pacquiao, he bounced back and captured “The Ring” Lightweight title on his lightweight debut when he beat Joel Casamayor via 11th Round Technical Knock Out on Casamayor vs Marquez, September 2008.
While Mexican-American boxer Juan Diaz, “Baby Bull“, back then had a professional record of 34 wins (17 by way of knock out, KO) and 1 loss. After his first career loss against the hands of Nate Campbell and lost his IBF, WBO and WBA belts, he bounced back and captured the vacant IBO Lightweight title when he beat Michael Katsidis via Split Decision, September 2008.
The Marquez vs Diaz video was a lightweight division title match with Marquez’s “The Ring” and Diaz’s IBO as well as the vacant WBO and vacant WBA belts at stake.
After Marquez’s stunning victory over Casamayor who’s never been knocked out before, the Ring magazine ranked him second on its pound-for-pound list, and rated him as the number one lightweight boxer.
On the Marquez vs Diaz video, Diaz controlled the fight in the early rounds pinning Marquez on the ropes and occasionally staggering him with big left hands. In the fifth round, his strong punches opened a cut above Juan Manuel’s right eye. “The Dinamita” bounced back on the eighth round wherein his punch opened a gash over the “Baby Bull” right eye and stunned him with a left hook before the end of the round.
On the ninth round with 35 seconds remaining, Marquez landed two hard rights to Diaz’s face in a three-punch combination that him down. He got up but Juan Manuel followed it up with a right uppercut to the chin that knocking down Diaz for the second time. The referee then stopped the fight.
Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1) defeated Juan Diaz (34-2-0) via 9th Round Technical Knock Out (TKO) in 2 minutes and 40 seconds to retain his “The Ring” Lightweight title and became the IBO, WBO and WBA World Lightweight Super Champion.
This boxing match was named as the 2009 “Fight of the Year” by “The Ring” and ESPN.

After this, Juan Manuel Marquez fought Floyd Mayweather, Jr. last September 19, 2009 in the Mayweather vs Marquez bout while Juan Diaz fought Paulie Malignaggi in the Diaz vs Malignaggi bout last August 22, 2009 then a rematch in the Diaz vs Malignaggi 2 bout last December 12, 2009.
Both boxers are scheduled to fight each other once more in rematch on July 31, 2010 in the Marquez vs Diaz 2 bout.
