His perfect streak ended when Nate Campbell handed him his first loss via Split Decision last March 2008 where he also lost all his title belts. After this, Diaz bounced back and defeated Michael Katsidis to win the vacant IBO Lightweight title.

Then he faced “The Ring” Lightweight Champion, Juan Manuel Marquez, in an epic match-up last February 2009, Marquez defeated him via 9th Round TKO to capture the IBO, WBO and WBA World Lightweight Super Champion title belts in Marquez vs Diaz, named as 2009 “Fight of the Year” by “The Ring” and ESPN.

He then moved up to junior welterweight and fought Paulie Malignaggi twice. Diaz won in the controversial first fight in Diaz vs Malignaggi last August 2009 but later lost in the Diaz vs Malignaggi 2 rematch last December.

Seven months after losing, he faced Marquez again in the highly anticipated rematch in Marquez vs Diaz 2. He failed to recapture his lightweight world titles as he was dominated by his opponent in 12 rounds.
