The possibility of a Pacquiao vs Mayweather showdown for 2010 just got slimmer after Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and his camp ignored the Money Time countdown set on Top Rank’s website last week.
After Top Rank chief Bob Arum couldn’t get a deal signed by Mayweather to fight the Filipino boxing superstar, the next options would be a fight against Antonio Margarito or a rematch with Miguel Cotto.
Arum said recently that Manny Pacquiao will fight Margarito on November 13 for the vacant WBC World Super Welterweight title belt but the venue hasn’t been named yet. Possible venues will either be in Las Vegas, Nevada if Margarito can get his license back in time, in Monterrey, Mexico or in Abu Dhabi.
The California State Athletic Commission suspended him for at ‘least a year’ last February 2009 after the hand-wrap controversy wherein he was caught with a hardened substance in his knuckle pads before the Margarito vs Mosley last January 2009. Because of this, he was forced to rewrap his hands multiple times before that fight and later got knocked out by Mosley.
Margarito returned to the boxing ring in Mexico last May 2010 wherein he won over Roberto Garcia via Unanimous Decision on Margarito vs Garcia at Latin Fury 14 and captured the vacant WBC International Super Welterweight title belt.
Arum said that Margarito was chosen over the newly crowned WBA World Super Welterweight Champion, Miguel Cotto, who recently won on the Cotto vs Foreman because it would be perceived as a more competitive bout and Pacquiao has already defeated Cotto once.
“Antonio is so much bigger than he (Pacquiao) is, it’s a very attractive fight,” Arum said. “Cotto, we figure, should have another fight this winter and shown the improvement he’s made under (new trainer) Emanuel Steward and then we could look at him maybe next year.”
Pacquiao defeated Cotto convincingly via 12th Round Technical Knock Out last November 2009 on Pacquiao vs Cotto, leaving the Puerto Rican star with a swollen and bloody face.
The Manny Pacquiao vs Antonio Margarito fight on November 13 would give the pound-for-pound king an even harder to reach feat, eighth world titles in eight weight divisions.
