It’s sweet sixteen for the Los Angeles Lakers as the franchise grabbed its 16th NBA Championship title. It’s as sweet as it gets as Kobe Bryant got his fifth ring and his second consecutive NBA Finals MVP award.

After averaging more than 28 points per game, Kobe Bryant was awarded the Bill Russell trophy by Celtic-legend himself, Mr. Russell after their epic 2010 NBA Finals Game 7 victory over the C’s.

Although the 2010 NBA Finals Most Valuable Player, Bryant, had a poor shooting night with just 6-of-24, he managed to pull-up a crucial basket and made clutch free throws late in the game when the Lakers needed it most. He filled in the boards as he grabbed 15 monster rebounds and still led the game with 23 points.

There are some points why Kobe’s fifth ring and second NBA Finals MVP are so far the most important achievements of his basketball career.

After winning the last year’s NBA title, Kobe proved that he can win a ring without Shaq and also tied him with four championships apiece. This time, The Black Mamba surpassed him.

He also surpassed Tim Duncan who also has four rings himself breaking the three-way tie between the three NBA superstars.

Bryant is one NBA Championship trophy away from tying with the Bobcats owner, Michael Jordan’s six and MJ’s two 3-peats. There are lots of steps to climb as far as Jordan’s achievements on and off the court, but this fifth ring definitely moved him up the ladder.

There are lots of arguments that LeBron James already surpassed Kobe in terms of this era’s best basketball player but come to think of it, it’s better to have two NBA Finals MVP trophy coupled with two NBA Championship titles than to have two regular season MVP awards with no rings at all. Right?
