Cotto won world titles in three different weight classes. He captured this feat by becoming world champion in divisions such as the Light Welterweight, Welterweight and currently, Super Welterweight.

He only has two career losses so far. Early on his career, after having an undefeated record with twenty wins, he won his first world title on his 21st fight when he defeated Kelson Pinto last September 2004 for the vacant WBO World Junior Welterweight belt.

Cotto successfully defended his WBO belt six times against Randall Bailey, DeMarcus Corley, Muhammad Abdullaev, Ricardo Torres, Gianluca Branco and Paul Malignaggi. He then vacated the title to move up to welterweight.

He won his second title on his first fight on a new weight class when he defeated Carlos Quintana last December 2006 for the vacant WBA World Welterweight belt. Cotto successfully defended his WBA belt for times against Oktay Urkal, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley and Alfonso Gomez.

On his fifth title defense, Miguel Angel suffered his first professional loss against Antonio Margarito via 11th Round TKO last July 2008 on Cotto vs Margarito wherein he also lost his belt.

Cotto bounced back and got a world title once again when he defeated Michael Jennings last February 2009 for the vacant WBO World Welterweight belt. He successfully defended his WBO belt against Joshua Clottey before losing it to pound-for pound king, Manny Pacquiao.

Seven months after losing to the pound-for-pound king, he moved up in weight and faced Yuri Foreman in Cotto vs Foreman. The fight was close until in the early rounds until Yuri slipped in round seven and badly twisted his right knee.

Because of this, his movement was limited and Miguel took the advantage and knocked out his opponent in the ninth to capture the WBA World Super Welterweight belt, his third world title in as many weight classes.

Nine months after, he successfully defended his super welterweight title over Ricardo Mayorga via 12th Round TKO on Relentless: Cotto vs Mayorga.
