Mexican-American boxer Antonio Margarito, “Tijuana Tornado”, back then had a professional record of 37 wins (27 by way of knock out, KO) and 5 losses. He captured the WBA World Welterweight belt when he beat Miguel Cotto via 11th Round Technical Knock Out on Cotto vs Margarito, July 2008.
While American boxer Shane Mosley, “Sugar“, back then had a professional record of 45 wins (38 by way of knock out, KO) and 5 losses. After his loss from Miguel Cotto, he won the vacant WBA Inter-Continental Light Middleweight title when he beat Ricardo Mayorga via 12th Round Knock Out, September 2008.
The Margarito vs Mosley video was a welterweight division title match with Margarito’s WBA belt at stake.
Before this fight, a controversy arisen when Mosley’s trainer, Nazeem Richardson observed that Margarito had a pasty white substance in his handwraps. Because of this, Margarito was forced to rewrap his hands multiple times before the fight.
On the Margarito vs Mosley video, Mosley dominated Margarito round after round using his hand speed, accurate shots and lots of strong right hands to the jaw that wore Antonio down.
Shane knocked Antonio with a series of heavy overhand rights at the end of the eighth round. Then early on the ninth, Margarito was unable to defend against Mosley’s heavy barrage of punches forcing the referee to step in as Margarito slumped to the canvas a second time.
Shane Mosley (46-5-0) defeated Antonio Margarito (37-6-0) via 9th Round Technical Knock Out (TKO) in 43 seconds and became the WBA World Welterweight Super Champion.
It was later confirmed by the California Department of Justice laboratory that the substance to be similar in nature to plaster of paris. The California State Athletic Commission judged the evidence and considered him and his trainer Javier Capetillo guilty of altering his bandages, suspending him for ‘at least a year’ on February 10, 2009.
