This is the second day of the Elite Eight (8) of the 2010 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament.

On the Midwest Region, #5 seeded Michigan State Spartans is up against #6 Tennessee Volunteers on their Elite Eight March Madness match-up or the Midwest Regional Finals, wherein the winner advances to the Final Four Round.

The Michigan State vs Tennessee game was a very tight and close game as both teams exchange baskets until the end.

The Spartans led the game in the second half by as many as eight but the Volunteers closed the gap to one, 69-68 with a putback from Brian Williams with 2:10 left.

Without Michigan State’s star Kalin Lucas due to injury, Korie Lucious took over the point guard spot. Lucious missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 29 seconds left and Tennessee’s Scotty Hopson grabbed the rebound.

Then, Hopson was fouled at the other end, and made the first free throw. After a Michigan State timeout, he missed the second one and Lucious got the rebound, the game was tied at 69-all.

On the Spartans’ possession, Raymar Morgan was fouled by J. P. Prince with 1.8 seconds remaining. Morgan made the first free throw and after timeouts from both teams, he intentionally missed the second one. Tennessee got the rebound, called a quick time-out but unfortunately when the game resumed, Prince missed a mid-court shot before the buzzer.

Michigan State’s Durrell Summers scored 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Raymar Morgan got 13 points and 10 rebounds while Draymond Green added 13 points.

Although Tennessee lost, they proved that they belong in their first regional finals appearance. The Volunteers made their first six shots of the game including 4-of-4 from 3-point range and shot 51 percent in the field overall.

Wayne Chism led Tennessee with 13 points while J.P. Prince finished with 12 on 5-of-5 shooting and Brian Williams got 11 points. This is their first regional finals appearance after Tennessee beat Ohio State on Sweet 16.

Michigan State Spartans won over the Tennessee Volunteers with a final score of 70-69. They are on their way to their second straight Final Four appearance and 6th in 12 years. All six trips come under coach Tom Izzo.

Izzo, the hard-nosed Tennessee coach who preaches defense, rebounding and physical play to the Spartans was embraced by Earvin “Magic” Johnson after the game. Johnson is a former Michigan State star who’s best remembered on the Magic vs Bird court rivalry.
